Pete Carty

He was a slave in Tennessee whom the regiment liberated in the summer of 1862 on their march.  He took the last name of Carty who was his slave master.  He remained with them for a good part of the time. The men gave him the nickname, Black Pete.  He became a paid servant of the officers in the regiment.

After the War, he came to Ohio and lived in the Springfield area as a shoe cobbler.

Years later, he stopped in at the annual reunion the 26th Ohio Association was having in Columbus, Ohio, and everyone was surprised and happy to see him once again.
