John Varley, A, 19, 06/10/61, private. 12/02/1862, transferred to 4th US Cavalry. While with the 26th Ohio, he was alleged to have conducted secret duty for Generals Robert Schrenck and John Wilder. His unexplained absences led some to conclude that he had deserted. Varley was mentioned by Samuel Robinson in a story describing him as deserting and then allegedly joining a Confederate cavalry. While then serving with the Confederate cavalry, they captured a Union scouting party that included former 26th Ohio brother, Sgt. Ferdinand Gitchel, Co. F. Varley led Gitchel away from the other captured prisoners and showed him the way to return to Union lines in early 1865 near Petersburg, Va. While with the 4th US Cavalry, he served admirably and assisted in the capture of Henry Wirz at Andersonville, and guarding President Jefferson Davis after his capture. His service details are certainly a conundrum. Note: Varley's name in misspelled on the regiment's official roster as Vaoley.
