1st Lt Samuel Chesnut  Co B


1st Lieutenant Samuel Chesnut  was born 26 Nov 1839 in or near Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio. He married Mary Hussey on 1 Oct 1868 in Lockland, Hamilton County, Ohio.  He is the brother of Corporal Daniel Chesnut, also of Co B.

Samuel and Mary raised the following children:
1. Edith Belle Chesnut (my gr-grandmother) - b. 7 Jan 1873 in Ross County, m. David Thomas Harris on 10 Dec 1891 in Joliet, Will County, Illinois, d. 12 June 1935 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana.

2. Edward Chesnut - b. 19 Feb 1875 in Ross County, Ohio, d. 9 Aug 1882 in Joliet, Will County, Illinois.

3. Clifford H. Chesnut - b. 12 Feb 1877 in Ross County, Ohio, m. Margaret Eggman on 21 July 1899 in Madison County, Indiana, d. 17 Oct 1917 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana.

4. May Florence Chesnut - b. 4 May 1880 in Joliet, Illinois, m. Lee Kiphart on 24 Feb 1906 in Howard County, Indiana, d. 25 June 1938 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana.

Samuel's parents were James Blain Chesnut and Nancy Ann Truitt.  Samuel died 8 June 1898 in Madison County, Indiana. 

Samuel is buried in West Maplewood Cemetery, Lot 708E, Anderson, Madison County, Indiana.  Mary is at his side.  He has both a regular stone and a veterans stone.  However, the veterans stone lists him as "Samuel Chesnet" of the "20th OVI". 

He enlisted at the age of 21 on 6/17/61 as part of the initial enlistment of the regiment.  He reenlisted in 1864 as a veteran.  He was mustered out of service on 10/21/65 at Victoria, Texas.
